The damned among us who, for reasons known only the Elder Ones, have
been called upon to write about zombies in a pop culture landscape where
self-referential Abbott and Costello-like movies like Zombieland
already exist, and Plants versus Zombies, and Zombie Johnny Cash
T-shirts, for crying out loud, have an obligation to the universe to
take a stab at something new and different. Something that’s never been
done before. New Dawn Fades is full of such stabs. More than
stabs, actually -- what you’ll find here are thrusts, slashes and
downright evisceration on a convention that just won’t die. A handful of strong-hearted writers with more guts than most of their creations stage an outright attack on the zombie genre. It is an assault of such bold, innovative, horrific and sometimes downright funny intensity that they manage, in the process, to turn the whole enterprise upside-down and burn it to the ground.
